Macular Degeneration

While it may sound like some kind of science fiction or something that would happen at a time off into the future, eye lens implants are actually a common practice today and many people have benefitted from this procedure.

Typically the procedure is done for someone who has cataracts either in both eyes or just one. A cataract clouds the eye and makes vision difficult, if not impossible. People with cataracts have often likened it to looking out of a car window that has been fogged up. Certainly this is a trying way to live and people with the condition were in search of a solution for a long time.

What happens in a lens implant procedure, also called intraocular lenses, is that a new, unclouded lens, is put in the patient’s eye to replace the lens damaged by the cataract. To do this, the doctor will make a tiny incision in the eye and remove the clouded lens. The new lens is then put back through the same incision. It is typically done on an outpatient basis.

There are two types of lenses, monofocal and multifocal intraocular lenses. As the name suggests, monofocal lenses correct vision at one distance, which multifocal lenses correct vision at multiple distances. This way, in addition to the clouded lens being removed, the patient also has their vision corrected. Some patients may still need glasses, however, if their vision is particularly bad.

There are some risks associated with lens implants that you need to be aware of if you are thinking of undergoing the procedure on one or both eyes. The procedure can lead to increased pressure in the eye, leakage, retinal detachment, cornea adema, and doctor error. In the case of certain errors, like misdiagnosis of the strength of the cataract, will require a second procedure to correct. Be sure to talk about all these risks with your doctor.

Also make sure that once you have the surgery, you are made aware of what the signs of complications look like, so you know to seek treatment if something has gone wrong. For example, if you experience “floaters” in your field of vision, this could be a sign of retinal detachment and you should contact your doctor for additional treatment.
Whether or not the risks outweigh the benefits is something that you will need to discuss with your family and your doctor. Keep in mind that many of the side effects are not especially common and many people go through the lens implant procedure without any problems or worries.

For those people whose vision has been severely affected by cataracts, the lens implant is usually the best and last hope to see normally again. Whether you want to admit it or not, living with cataracts is very difficult and you likely have had to rely on your family more than you like. Having the lens implant surgery could be just what you need to get your independence back and start living your life again.

When you’ve made the decision to purchase new hardwood floors for your home, you have most likely been overwhelmed with all the different types, styles, cuts and hardness of hardwood floors. Well, your not alone. It is impossible to make a sound choice without understanding exactly what’s what when selecting your new floor. To help clarify the grading system, here’s a list of the types of grades of particular wood as well as the hardness scale of each type of lumber used to make hardwood floors.

Oak and Ash

Clear

Select

Common 1 & 2 (Also called Middle Grade)

Red Oak Common 1 & 2 (Also called Rustic Grade)

Cabin or Tavern ***

If you are looking to buy the best of the best, “Clear Grade” is what you want. This wood is free of any knots, thick dark grain and imperfections. It gives your room a very clean, classic sophisticated look. Select is almost the same as Clear, however, this grade does allow for slightly darker grain. The Common 1 and Common 2 (Middle Grade) are the most popular due to the natural characteristics of the wood which allow the knots, twists and noticeable grain texture to show through. Each piece is unique and beautiful in its own way. Red Oak Common or Rustic, is a true natural wood with every dark, thick grain and bold knots on display. It gives your room a true “rustic” outdoor feel. It is a bold look for those who desire it.

The final grade is “Cabin” or “Tavern”. Every major manufacture produces the very low end wood flooring. Since all parts of the tree are used in the manufacturing process, there are always strips available for Cabin or Tavern grade. Be careful when selecting this grade because manufacturers do not offer a warranty with this product. Make sure you are clear with the limitations of this type of flooring before you invest.

Hard Maple, Beech, Birch, Pecan

First

Second

Third

These types of lumber are categorized differently. Although the appearance of the wood is similar to the Oak and Ash grading, the terms are different. First is the clearest and best appearance with the fewest character marks. The color consistency is natural and even. Second is wood strip that vary in color, has numerous streaks and grain markings and has visible knots. Finally, the third grading is the same as the Rustic listed above. Very bold in colors, streaking, grain and knots.

Below is a list of the hardness of lumber. The harder wood is less likely to dent from shoes and wear, yet harder to drive a nail into it for securing each hardwood floor strip. Maple, Oak and Hickory are among the most popular with customers.

Brazilian Cherry – 2350

Mesquite – 2345

Santos Mahogany – 2200

Merbau – 1925

Jarrah – 1910

Hickory/Pecan – 1820

Wenge – 1630

Hard Maple – 1450

Australian Cypress – 1375

White Oak – 1360

Ash – 1320

American Beech – 1300

Red Oak (Northern) – 1290

Yellow Birch – 1260

Heart Pine – 1225

Black Walnut – 1010

Southern Yellow Pine – 870

Douglas Fir – 660

Hopefully this explanation of the different grades of lumber used for hardwood floors has been helpful. The best way to determine your choice is to arm yourself with the knowledge one needs to make an educated decision. But just remember, if a price is too good to be true, it usually is with hardwood flooring.

Austin Tooth Restoration

Many people put off having dental procedures done because of the cost. Dental insurance definitely isn’t like health insurance. The monthly payments are usually a fraction of health insurance costs, but the up-front cost of a dental procedure can be more than a couple years worth of dental insurance premiums. Dental insurance usually pays for or discounts regular cleanings and exams, but the major dental work needed by many people and cosmetic dentistry are not covered.

The most detrimental result of putting off these procedures, such as root canals and even fillings, is that the neglect can cause worse problems to form. A simple cleaning or x-ray exam can pinpoint problem areas, which can be taken care of easily and with less money out of your pocket. Most people are aware of this fact; however, it still doesn’t take away the need for coming up with the money to have them done in the first place.

Finally, the dental community has teamed financing companies to make it easy to have procedures done and pay for them monthly instead of in one lump sum. Depending on the need of the patient, several procedures can cost a few thousand dollars; however, financing can make it possible to have these done in a timely manner. This may prevent further damage and more costly courses of action in the future.

Programs like CareCredit are available now for patients to use. Once an account is opened, it can be used like a dental line of credit. Multiple family members in a household can be under the same policy or account and use the credit line to have their dental work done.

These financing programs usually carry a low interest rate, but minor work, such as cleanings and fillings, should probably be paid for out of pocket when at all possible. Although the line of credit can be used for virtually any dental procedure, paying interest on a small bill isn’t worth it in the long run. Also, you will most likely want to keep as much of the credit line available for emergency cases and unexpected dental needs.

Dental care can cost as much or more than health care sometimes. It makes sense to use a program like CareCredit for financing your larger dental procedures. Keeping your mouth healthy is a daily responsibility. Just as you maintain your car with oil changes and tune ups, your body requires the same diligence. Now you have a tool to help you do it effectively.

Microdermabrasion is a term that is often heard in cosmetic circles, though not everyone understands exactly what it is or what exactly it is used for. If you are exploring cosmetic procedures and considering having one performed, microdermabrasion might be beneficial for you. Microdermabrasion is often used to treat acne, discoloration of the skin, lines and wrinkles of the skin, and even sun-damaged skin. It is often considered to be a deeper version of a chemical peel, because it affects the skin layers far beneath the skin’s surface. Yet, it isn’t as major as a facelift.

Microdermabrasion is actually a mini procedure that is almost like sanding the skin to remove dead skin cells. For example, imagine using a piece of sandpaper on a rough surface, and how the surface feels once you are done using the sandpaper. That is how your skin will feel after you undergo a microdermabrasion procedure. It will be silky and smooth, as if you have unearthed a brand new layer of skin. But instead of sandpaper, microdermabrasion uses oxide crystals to remove the top layer of your skin. As a result, your skin cells will work to produce a new layer of skin that is fresh and clean. It can also clean out your pores, get rid of unsightly scars, and reduce future acne breakouts.

If you are not comfortable with microdermabrasion, there are other types of facial treatments available that offer similar results. For example, facial resurfacing is a popular cosmetic procedure that harnesses the use of FDA-approved lasers. The laser beam essentially treats the deeper tissue under the surface of the skin, much like microdermabrasion. However, it is often seen as more safe and effective than microdermabrasion, because it causes less discomfort and lasts much longer. If you are considering improving the look and feel of your skin through a cosmetic procedure, facial resurfacing is a good choice. The results of successful facial resurfacing are numerous. These include a decrease in fine lines and pigment, smoother and refined skin, and a more vigorous appearance. You will normally have to undergo more than a few facial resurfacing treatments in order to achieve optimum results. Good candidates for facial resurfacing or microdermabrasion are individuals who have severe acne scarring or suffer from terrible acne, have discoloration of the skin, or have visibly sun-damaged skin. You can consult with a local cosmetic or laser spa for more information about microdermabrasion and facial resurfacing, and to choose which procedure is right for you.

The state of New Hampshire was originally a colony which was founded on a land grant given to Captain John Mason and Sir Ferdinando Gorges by the Council for New England in 1622. Its first settlement was at Odiorne’s Point near Portsmouth and was called Pannaway Plantation. The first settlers were a group of English fishermen under David Thompson in 1623 who built a fort, a manor house and some other buildings mainly for fish processing.

Settlers of Pannaway later moved to the Portsmouth region and named their new settlement Strawberry Banke. Cocheco at Dover Neck was the other plantation set up at the time. Religious leaders founded the seacoast plantations of Hampton and Exeter in 1638. In 1631 Captain Thomas Wiggin was appointed the governor of the Upper Plantation which comprised of present-day Dover, Durham and Stratham.

Most of the settlers turned to fish and timber as a source of livelihood. After the death of John Mason, New Hampshire’s four plantations were forced to accept Massachusetts’ rule for a period of 40 years. Meanwhile the ownership title bounced from owner to owner. This region was witness to continuous strife between Native Americans and white settlers. By the middle of the 1700s white settlers’ supremacy had been established.

By 1760 there were 61 New Hampshire towns, most named nostalgically after British towns. Eighty-six more New Hampshire towns came into being by 1775.

New Hampshire was a British colony for 150 years. It revolted against the British rule during the American Revolution. The raid on Fort William and Mary in 1774 in Portsmouth Harbor was the only battle fought here. This raid is also referred to as the first battle of the Revolutionary War.

New Hampshire’s colonial history is ridden with tales of greed, fear and survival on one hand and honor, spirit and invention on the other.

New Hampshire has the distinction of having been home to America’s 14th President- Franklin Pierce. The election of 1852 saw this New Hampshire lawyer reach the White House. Since 1952 New Hampshire has been the holding the presidential primary in every presidential election year.

New Hampshire had been a textile stronghold till the late 1950s. However, with the collapse of the textile industry New Hampshire changed focus to technology.

Getting engaged can be the most romantic and exciting time in a person’s life. If you have recently become engaged to be married, chances are you are in a very rosy spot in your relationship. Things are good and you adore your partner. You might even find yourself describing yourself as the happiest person in the world. Love can do that to a person, make him or her feel on top of the world.

While you are making your rounds to friends and loved ones sharing the happy news of your engagement, there is always some negative jerk that will have something cynical to say about marriage. Maybe a sarcastic “good luck, you are going to need it,” or perhaps this negative person will simply spout off some divorce statistics. You can shrug this person off and go on your merry way, but most people will find themselves entertaining doubts about a marriage proposal as one point or another. What if I am making a mistake? What if this is not the right person for me? What if things just do not work out for us?

While all of these fears are completely normal and even legitimate, there is no need to do anything drastic or even begin to doubt your love for your partner. Maybe you are considering hiring a private investigator. There are plenty of “private eyes” out there for hire that can investigate your potential spouse to see if he or she is being unfaithful. Some of these private investigators will even provide you with evidence or irrefutable, undeniable proof. Perhaps you would like some sort of safety net or even a guarantee that if things go wrong, you are protected. Is a prenuptial agreement for you? As unromantic as it may be, the following are five reasons why you may want to consider a prenuptial agreement before you tie the knot.

1. You have a lot more wealth or assets than your future spouse. A prenuptial agreement may make certain that your beloved is marrying you for who you are, and not for your money.

2. You are remarrying. Your legal and financial considerations may be much different when you remarry than they were with your previous marriage(s). There may be prior children involved, child support obligations, and different asset considerations. A prenuptial agreement may make sure that your assets are distributed according to your wishes when you pass away.

3. Your future spouse has a lot of debt. Hopefully your marriage will never end. But if it does, you do not want to be responsible for the debt your partner incurred prior to your marriage. A prenuptial agreement can ensure that this does not happen.

4. You are much poorer than your future spouse. Prenuptial agreements aren’t just for the financially wealthy. A prenuptial agreement can also protect you if you are financially weaker than your partner.

5. You are planning on quitting your job to raise your children. Quitting your job will obviously have a negative impact your income and your wealth. A prenuptial agreement may ensure that the financial burden of taking care of the children is shared fairly by both you and your partner.

Almost every woman loves to look stylish. Most women, however, do not want to spend a fortune trying to keep up with the latest fashion trends. With the bad economy, bills to pay, and family to take care of, many women are reluctant to spend much money on themselves. Luckily, there is an easy and affordable way to update your wardrobe without having to max out your credit card limit.

By updating your shoes, you can easily give last year’s wardrobe a fresh new look. Because your shoes can be worn with multiple outfits, just a simple new pair or two of shoes can do wonders for your clothing selection. Shoes are also a great investment because they are long lasting. When they do start to show signs of wear, you can always have them repaired or refurbished for less than the cost of replacing the shoes. You can find a shoe repair shop near you or even use an online resource.

As with most seasons, there are a lot of styles and varieties of shoes to choose from to complete your Fall and Winter look. Below are some trend observations for this year.

Fall and Winter Shoe Color Trends – This year, the fashion trend for shoe color is anything dark. Black, of course is always in, but do not be afraid to try the deep hues of green, dark reds, midnight blues, cognac browns, and deep, dark purples or violets. This is great news too because dark colors are easy to work with and will pair nicely with most any clothing item you already have in your wardrobe.

Fall and Winter Shoe Heel Trends – The popular heel style this fall and winter is the spiky stiletto… the higher the better. This is a heel style trend that has been around for a while and does not appear to be going away any time soon. But the spiky stiletto heel may not be a comfortable or practical option for lots of women. Do not fret, the spiky stiletto heel is not the only heel option out there. You can always go with a shorter heel, even the ultra low kitten heel. Just make sure that the heel on the shoe you choose to purchase is not a blocky or chunky style heel like those of the late nineties or your shoe will look dated.

Fall and Winter Shoe Detail Trends – Shoes with lots of detail are in style this fall and winter. This makes sense if you look at the highly detailed sandals and flats of this past spring and summer. If lots of detail does not go with your personal taste, do not be alarmed because the shoes of fall and winter are not as heavy on the detailing. Fall and winter shoes will be seen with lots of textures, fringe, and other subtle pieces of flair. When choosing a pair of shoes to purchase for this fall and winter, do take care not to choose something outrageously detailed or over the top. A wild looking shoe, no matter how trendy at the moment, will not have much longevity. In fact, a shoe like this may not even make it to the next year.

The goal of internet search engines is to deliver the web content that is most relevant to those who are searching for something, whether it is information or products. If the goal of your website is to attract visitors who are interested in what you have to say or what you have to sell, then you know that you need to achieve the highest possible ranking within the search engine results for key words and phrases that pertain to your website. Search engines will rank your website based upon proprietary algorithms that help them determine whether your website is likely to be not only interesting, but the most interesting choice for web users searching for any particular words or phrases.

While the proprietary equations that each search engine uses is not only a closely held secret, but is also different that every other search engine’s equation, there are some common threads that can be used to help make sure your website gets the attention it deserves. Search engine spiders scan websites for a variety of elements. The URL itself is one consideration in the ranking of a website’s relevance, as is the structure of the site, but one of the strongest weightings is given to the content of the website.

Content can be text, video, or pictures. Since the goal is to provide content relevant to a searcher’s text query, focused text content can help you define your website to the major search engines so that they know which of their users will be most interested in your site. Text on your website should be crafted with consideration for the way in which those people who would be most interested in your information or products would search for it. For example, let’s say that your website sells astronomy equipment. Most people interested in your products are not going to enter “astronomy equipment” into Google when they are in the market for a new telescope. They are going to enter “telescope” or even a popular name brand or model number for a particular telescope. They may also enter phrases like “the best telescope” or “best telescope deals.” These and other phrases that will be specifically used by web searchers interested in buying your products are the ones that should be the focus of your web content.

More relevant content is better, in terms of search engine rankings. Blog entries or information pages on your website should aim to include key words and phrases in both the titles of each entry or page, and throughout the content text. It should talk about the specific phrase or word enough to let the search engine decide that your website, or at least one page of your website, is all about choosing “the best telescope.”

Structuring your website and creating relevant content in order to deliver search engine users to your site are the basics of search engine marketing. For those new to the game, it can be daunting, especially when competing against established websites that employ the services of professional search engine marketers who have a thorough understanding of all the tools of the trade. Unless you are a professional in this trade yourself, it is well worth it to employ a high quality internet search marketing professional to help you achieve the results you want. Meanwhile, remember that content is king.

With the winter months approaching, many home owners begin to think of their home heating options. There are many ways to heat a home such as central heating and air conditioning, furnace heat, steam heat, electric space heater heat, fireplace heat, wood burning stove heat, and electric fireplaces. If you are considering one or more of these options, probably the first thing that comes to your mind is, “how much money is this going to cost me?”

Maybe you are thinking of purchasing one of the electric fireplace inserts that you have seen on the market this coming winter and you would like to know how much these home heating items cost to operate. Certainly you would not want purchase something that is not cost effective for you as a home owner. You must look beyond the initial purchase price of the electric fireplace insert and evaluate the ongoing costs of operation such as energy requirements and maintenance to figure out the true cost of running an electric fireplace insert.

An electric fireplace insert will generally cost as much to operate as a standard electric room heater. Most of the electric fire place inserts on the market today come equipped with multiple heat output settings. These multiple heat output settings allow you to adjust the amount of electricity wattage you are using based on how much heat you need for your room size and the weather conditions at the time. For example, most fire place insert units can be adjusted between output ranges of 600 watts and 1800 watts. This will obviously allow the home owner some flexibility in controlling how much heat is used and therefore how much the electric fireplace insert is costing to operate.

Another factor to consider in the operating cost of your electric fireplace insert is the cost of electricity. Obviously, the price of electricity where you live will be a factor in how much your electric fireplace unit costs to operate. Therefore, if you live in an area that has a very low electricity cost, an electric fireplace insert may be a very cost effective way for you to decide to heat your home. You can determine the electricity cost rate in your area by looking at a past electric bill for your home or by calling the electric company that serves you and asking to speak to a customer service representative. Some electricity providers even offer a rebate for installing new and/or energy efficient appliances. The electric fireplace insert you choose may fall into this category, so check with your electric company about this as well. Of course, this would be a one time cost savings, but still something to factor into your calculations.

The last thing you should take into consideration when trying to calculate the cost of operating and electric fireplace in your home is your current climate. If you live someplace where the winters are particularly long and harsh, you are obviously going to be running your heating device quite a bit and for several months out of the year. If you live in an area where the winter climate is mild, your electric fireplace insert will not be running as long throughout the day and the number of months you even use your unit per year will be minimal.

It is no surprise with the major advancements in technology over the last two decades that the Internet has come a long way. Many Americans are quickly becoming dependent on the Internet for more than just information sharing and sending email. The Internet has affected how we work, how we shop, and probably most importantly, how we go to school. With online education becoming more and more popular, it is becoming very evident that there are many wonderful advantages of online education.

Online education has helped people who normally would not be able to go to college earn a college degree. One of the primary benefits to online education is that with the connectivity of the Internet, students can go to school anywhere. People who are not physically close to the school that they want to attend can go to school over the Internet where location is not an issue. As long as there is an Internet connection, you have everything you need.

Besides location, online schools offer anytime learning. Students can fit school into their own schedule instead of trying to get to a college campus a few times each week at a specific time. Online education is set up in such a manner that students do not have to physically be anywhere other than at their computer. There are programs and classes that meet online at set times each week, and for those who really need flexibility, there are classes that do not require any sort of meeting time at all. These classes are truly flexible and offer students with the most time constraints the most opportunity to achieve their educational goals.

Another major benefit to online learning is that the programs are often accelerated, and students can complete their degrees or certificate programs in less time than they would normally spend in an equivalent brick and mortar program. There are many online bachelor’s degree programs that can be completed in as little as three years, which is a whole year less than the standard classroom based program at a University. There are many certificate programs and training programs that can be completed in weeks or months that will completely prepare someone for a new career.

It is now possible for a busy working professional to complete a degree program or a certificate program from the comfort of their own home during times that are most convenient for them. People who could not quit their day jobs to attend classes can now take classes that conform to their busy schedules. Online education is more convenient for the busy working professional than any other form of education.

Online education has helped many people meet their educational goals in less time and with more convenience than they ever thought possible. With the advances in connectivity over the Internet, it is likely that online education will only continue to become more and more popular and we will see even more benefits to this new style of education.
